Akhangaran: piezometer sensors, online monitoring and a digital model of the reservoir

Over the past four years the Akhangaran hydropower plant has fitted 37 piezometers with European-standard sensors, fully updated its control systems and software, replaced its dispatch equipment and repaired the gates. Key parameters now arrive online in real time. In the first half of 2026 the plant almost met its annual target of 54 million kWh.

On 24 June the Uzbekcosmos agency and Uzbekgidroenergo showed journalists how a digital 3D model of the Akhangaran reservoir is built: multibeam bathymetry of the bed is combined with aerial and satellite imagery. The model gives the water volume and surface area for every 10 cm change in level. Siltation is tracked the same way at 50 reservoirs across the country.
